After-Hours and Pre/Post Season (The Main "Open Surf")
-
Outside Lifeguard Hours: When lifeguards are not on duty—typically before 9:00 AM and after 6:00 PM daily—the entire beachfront effectively becomes "Open Surf." You are free to paddle out at almost any peak, provided you do so at your own risk.
-
Pre/Post Season: Before summer rotation kicks off in late May and after it concludes following Labor Day weekend, restrictions drop, allowing surfing across the city's beaches.
Summer Surfing Hours / Rotation (9:00 AM – 6:00 PM)
During the summer season, surfing is strictly prohibited on standard swimming beaches while lifeguards are on duty to protect the crowds. To accommodate surfers, the city designates one dedicated surfing beach in the Westholme area and one in the West End according to the rotation schedule.
-
On a standard schedule day, you must stick exclusively to those two designated zones if you are in the water between 9:00 AM and 6:00 PM.
"Noon Closure" Days (Marked with *)
On specific high-volume or holiday dates, the primary rotating beaches close to surfing at 12:00 PM.
-
What happens at noon? The lifeguards shift the surfing crowds off the primary rotating beaches to prevent conflicts with the peak afternoon swimming crowds.
-
Where to go: After 12:00 PM on those days, surfing moves to the permanent, non-rotating surf beaches (such as Lincoln Boulevard or Azores Street), which remain dedicated to surfing all day long regardless of the rotation.
Safety, Access and the Unexpected
-
Leashes Required: You must have a surfboard leash attached at all times on city beaches.
-
Beach Passes: During lifeguarded hours, you still need a valid Long Beach beach pass to cross the boardwalk and access the sand, even if you are just carrying a board straight to the water.
-
Lifeguard Discretion: If conditions become exceedingly dangerous (due to lightning, severe rip currents, or water quality issues), lifeguards will close the water entirely, temporarily suspending open surfing for safety.
